Book Collection Program
2010 Book Collection
Friday, June 11 and June 12, 8 am – 2 pm
La Porte County Fairgrounds Building #1.
The District held a Book Recycling Event at the La Porte County Fairgrounds in June of 2008 and 2009 on a Friday and Saturday. The books are collected, packed and picked up by a representative from Better World Books in Mishawaka, IN. where they are sorted. The money from books sold is donated to an agency of our choice. In 2008 we chose the National Center for Family Literacy throughout the U.S. The other books are recycled, keeping them all out of a landfill. The only cost for the program is advertising, so we will be adding this to our list of annual programs.
A total of 192 boxes of books were collected at the 2008 and a total of 216 boxes collected in 2009. The 216 boxes in 2009 contained 6,476 books. They were packed and sent to Better World Books where they were sorted. There were 938 books listed for sale on line at their website, 476 set aside for donation to Books for Africa and 5,061 books were recycled. The District would like to provide a day to this program for residents to come and select books for free before they are shipped to Better World Books.
There are currently four (4) drop off locations for books that residents may use throughout the year. Boxes are located at Readers World in the Michigan City Mall, the 4-H Extension Office in La Porte at 2358 N. U.S. Highway 35, Soil and Water Conservation District in La Porte at 100 Legacy Plaza W., and the Solid Waste District in La Porte at 2354 N. U.S. Highway 35.
