5-in-1 Collections
Twice a year, the Solid Waste District has a large-scale collection of several types of waste at the La Porte County Fairgrounds. Here are the collections offered during those events:
-
Tires
-
Appliances
-
Household Hazardous Waste
-
Electronics
-
Confidential document shredding
A small fee is charged only for the tire collections – participation in all other collections is FREE!
Tires
Scrap tires no longer have to wind up in a landfill – they can be recycled into products like mulch and asphalt. We’ve provided a convenient, affordable outlet for La Porte County residents to dispose of tires. A small charge to offset our costs has been instituted as follows:
-
4 or less standard car or truck tires are FREE.
-
More than 4 car tires up to 20" -- $1 each.
-
Farm tractor, semi truck, over the road tires from 21" to 53" -- $5 each.
-
TIRES OVER 54" (tread to tread) WILL NOW COST $75 EACH BECAUSE THEY REQUIRE SPECIAL RECYCLING AND HANDLING
-
Measurements are tread to tread
Appliances
Currently, under the auspices of new IDEM laws, an appliance containing CFC cannot be "dumped" unless all freon is removed by a licensed extractor and tagged as such. After CFC removal, there is a cost associated for disposal of said item. On average, you COULD spend $125.00 to have the CFC removed from your old refrigerator. We take them and haul them away FREE!. All you have to do is bring them to the Fairgrounds.
Household Hazardous Waste
Visit our page on “Household Hazardous Waste collections” for more information on this FREE collection.
Electronics
Although we do have two electronics recycling sites open five days a week in La Porte County, we also offer residents the opportunity to bring their electronics to us during our 5-in-1 collections for FREE!
ACCEPTABLE MATERIALS: Computers, monitors, electric typewriters, printers, fax machines, copiers, stereos, televisions, VCR’s, DVD players, telephones, laptops, cell phones, adding machines, zip drives, palm pilots, keyboards, mice, hard drives, calculators, scanners, electronic games (Playstation, Nintendo and X-Box etc.), microwaves, power supplies, battery backups, CD’s, DVD’s, non-PC monitors, CRT screens, plasma screens, LCD screens, computer towers, stereos, speakers, printed circuit board, small kitchen appliances, curling irons, blow dryers. NO VCR or CASSETTE TAPES.
Confidential document shredding
LaPorte County residents may bring as much junk mail, old bills and other paper documents as they want for destruction at this FREE document shredding event. Documents in any condition can be accepted (including staples).
This service is provided by your Solid Waste District. We take care of everything except hauling your items to the Fairgrounds.
If you have attended these events you will see first hand how hard and fast our helpers work. Every year we could not do the fine job without the total cooperation of all the dedicated workers and friends who make up our "team" effort. These people know their jobs and do them diligently. This is a very special thank you to those without whom this program could not function as it does.
We'll see you at the Fairgrounds!
