Book Collection
The books are collected, packed and picked up by a representative from Better World Books in Mishawaka, IN. where they are sorted. The money from books sold is donated to an agency of our choice.
Compost Facility in Westville
Compost is a necessary ingredient for full, lush flower gardens
and rich productive vegetable gardens. Both compost and mulch
are by-products of things that for many years were wasted
in LaPorte County. Not so any longer.
Pill Drop
Do you have unused/expired Prescription or Over The Counter
Medications at home? Don’t dump it down the toilet!! Bring
them to us, and we will dispose of them properly. Save the
environment.
Obsolete
Electronics
Residential, commercial and business electronics such as obsolete
computers, monitors, telephones, VCR's, copiers, radios, pagers,
printers, CD players, computer paraphernalia, electronic games,
FAX machines, TV's, modems, and electronic typewriters will
be accepted.
Household Batteries
Lake Michigan Districts' runs a collection
and recycling program for household batteries. Automotive
batteries can also be recycled; however, they are collected
through our mobile collection program.
Household Hazardous
Waste
The Lake Michigan Districts Household Hazardous Waste Mobile
Collection Program is a cooperative effort
between the Lake, Porter, and LaPorte County Solid Waste
Districts to collect household chemicals. LMD operates a
mobile collection unit which change location throughout
the three county area.
Household Recyclables
Able Disposal is our contract hauler and provides curbside
pickup of recyclable materials in your area. The supplied
bin should be put out at the road's edge before 6:00
a.m. each pickup day. Additional recyclables beside
the bin will also be picked up if the containers are marked
RECYCLING. You may also drop off your recyclables at any of our public drop off locations.
Ink
Jet Cartridges
Ink jet printer cartridges can be recycled FREE. Just
pick up a postage-paid envelope(s) at the Solid Waste District
of LaPorte County office, place the empty cartridge inside
the envelope and drop it in the mail or just drop it off
at one of the locations below.
Latex
Paint
Latex Paint is a water based nonhazardous liquid that will
solidify when the lids are removed from the containers and
paint is allowed to dry out.
Needle
Collection Program
The SHARPS Program is a FREE service for residents of LaPorte
County, Indiana to collect and dispose of needles which otherwise
would be placed in the trash.
Recycling Stand Program
The District has 16 recycling stands and loans them out according to availability for dates requested.
Swap and Switch
The Solid Waste District hosted their first Children’s Toy Swap and Switch September, 2010 at the La Porte County Fairgrounds. The event was well received and there are expectations for the growth of this program. One addition in the future will be the addition of children’s clothing. All items left are donated to a local organization.
Tires
and Appliances
Residents will be able to drop off tires and large household appliances for recycling.
Yard Waste Drop-off
Leaves (whole or shredded), chipped wood, clean lumber
(no nails), grass clippings, yard trimmings and brush, branches
up to 6 feet long and 12 inches in diameter, pine needles
and pine cones, corn stalks, bark and sod with no more than
4" of dirt.
