We have all driven the peaceful and lovely rural roads here
in LaPorte County. Too often, we see the illegal dumping
of junk from appliances to furniture which sullies our landscapes
and fills our ditches with things that destroy the natural
beauty of these throughways.
Guess the natural question is.....WHY?
Your Solid Waste District holds 2 Tire and White Goods
Collection Days per year -- one in May and one in October
- from 9 am to 2 pm at the Fairgrounds. Check
our calendar for upcoming events.
During 2005, we recycled 145.33 tons of tires and 45.3
tons of appliances.
This program was designed to help our residents answer
the question, "Where can I dispose of appliances containing
CFC (freon)?" We have two CFC extractors running constantly
from the moment we setup.
Currently,
under the auspices of new IDEM laws, an appliance containing
CFC cannot be "dumped" unless all freon is removed
by a licensed extractor and tagged as such. After CFC removal,
there is a cost associated for disposal of said item. On
average, you COULD spend $65.00 to rid your garage or basement
of that old refrigerator someone gave you. We take them,
remove the CFC, and haul them away. All you have to do is
bring them to the Fairgrounds.
Changes have been made in our program this year, so we
wanted to inform everyone immediately. To help offset costs,
a small charge has been instituted. The disposal prices
are as follows:
-
LaPorte County residents may still
bring in 10 car tires at NO CHARGE.
-
To dispose of more than 10 car
tires will cost $0.50 each.
-
To dispose of oversize tires will
cost $2.00 each.
-
There will be a $2.00 charge for
EACH microwave, water heater, camper/dorm refrigerator,
window air conditioner, humidifier, and dehumidifier collected.
-
There will be a $5.00 charge for
EACH washer, dryer, refrigerator, freezer, stove, central
air conditioner collected.
-
No more large tire loads will
be accepted until a count and charge is applied.
This service is provided by YOUR Solid Waste District.
We take care of everything except hauling items to the Fairgrounds.
If you have attended these events you can see, first hand,
how hard and fast our helpers work. Every year we could
not do the fine job without the total cooperation of all
the dedicated workers and friends who make up our "team"
effort. These people know their jobs and do them diligently.
This is a very special thank you to those without whom this
program could not function as it does.
We'll see you at the Fairgrounds!
