Book Collection Program

Our partner Better World Books has reached a donation milestone of $24 million from its book sales to literacy programs all over the world. The Mishawaka-based business supports several literacy initiatives worldwide, like Books for Africa and the National Center for Family Literacy.

Many different kinds of groups collect books for Better World Books, including libraries, college campuses and Solid Waste Districts like ours. Each have different levels of support for literacy initiatives. About 1 percent of sales from books donated through the Solid Waste District by La Porte County residents are set aside to fund Better World Books' Literacy and Education in Action Program (LEAP) grants. These are awarded to literacy and educational nonprofits and libraries for specific projects on the front lines of the fight to reduce global poverty through education.

Donate your books at the following locations:

  • Lake Park Plaza (behind mattress store), 4301 Franklin St., Michigan City

  • La Porte County Solid Waste District, 2857 W. State Road 2, La Porte

  • Pine Lake Shopping Center, 23 Pine Lake Ave., La Porte

  • Rolling Prairie Post Office, 5 S. Depot St., Rolling Prairie

As a result of your book donations in 2016, we were able to donate $141.08 to the Youth Service Bureau of La Porte County! That number will climb as sales of books you donate continues! Better World Books is also dedicated to environmental sustainability, recycling all books that cannot be sold or donated and purchasing support for wind energy projects to offset carbon emissions from shipping and other business activities.

Who would have thought that a simple idea like selling books could have had this much impact on the world?
